The ALCO RS-36, which ALCO listed as DL 701, was an 1,800 horsepower diesel-electric locomotive. ALCO produced 40 of them between February 1962 and August 1963 for seven railroads, a short run at the end of the builder road switcher era. Several have been preserved in operating condition or put on display. Atlantic and Danville number 2 has been fully restored and is owned by the Southern New England Railroad, now painted in Delaware and Hudson inspired colors as number 5012. Delaware and Hudson number 5015 was restored by the same group, Delaware and Hudson number 5017 is operational on the Delaware and Ulster Railroad, and number 5019 is stored at North Walpole, New Hampshire. Apache Railway number 800 has been donated for display in front of the Navajo County Courthouse in Holbrook, Arizona.
