The ALCO RS-32, designated DL721 by ALCO, was a 2,000 horsepower road switcher intended to compete with the EMD GP20 and the GE U25B. Only 35 units were produced: 25 ordered by the New York Central in 1961 and 10 by the Southern Pacific in 1962. New York Central's RS-32s were commonly seen in both road and local freight assignments. Southern Pacific's units were first used in road service but later settled into local freight work in San Francisco commute territory, where they were sometimes called on to rescue stalled commuter trains, and they ended their Southern Pacific careers in Texas during the late 1970s alongside other Alco models.
