ALCO Century 630

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The ALCO Century 630, or C630, was a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive of 3,000 horsepower built by the American Locomotive Company between 1965 and 1967 around the ALCO 251 prime mover. Seventy-seven were built for United States railroads, among them the Atlantic Coast Line, Chesapeake and Ohio, Louisville and Nashville, Norfolk and Western, Pennsylvania, Reading, Southern Pacific and Union Pacific. Montreal Locomotive Works made a C630M variant for Canadian railways and continued the design as the M630 after Alco stopped building locomotives. Preserved C630s include Norfolk and Western 1135 in Roanoke, Reading 5308 in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, and Union Pacific 2907 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
