ALCO Century 628

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The ALCO Century 628, or C628, was a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive rated at 2,750 horsepower and powered by the ALCO 251 engine. A total of 186 were built between December 1963 and December 1968: 135 for United States railroads, 46 for Mexican railroads and five for Hamersley Iron in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, where they hauled iron ore. It replaced the planned C624 in the Century line after being offered in August 1963, and the Southern Pacific bought the four demonstrators in 1964 plus 25 more in 1965. Preserved examples include Hamersley Iron 2000 in Dampier, Western Australia, and Delaware and Hudson 610 and Ferrocarril del Pacifico 606 at the Museo de los Ferrocarriles de Yucatan.
