ALCO Century 420

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The ALCO Century 420, often written C420, was a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive rated at 2,000 horsepower that the American Locomotive Company offered as part of its Century line in the 1960s. It was intended to replace the earlier RS-32 and was powered by the ALCO 251 prime mover. A total of 131 were built between June 1963 and August 1968, for railroads including the Lehigh Valley, Long Island Rail Road, Louisville and Nashville, Seaboard Air Line and Tennessee Central. Several examples survive today, and a few still work on short lines and tourist railroads, while all of the units ordered by the Nickel Plate, Mississippi Export and Piedmont and Northern have been scrapped.
