Honda updated the fifth-generation VFR (RC46) in 2000 with oxygen sensors, a catalytic converter and an EFI system able to enter closed loop mode when cruising on the highway. These also came with a temperature-actuated fast idle system, negating the need for a choke lever, and the rear-view mirrors got metal stalks instead of rubberized ones. Bikes supplied for Europe also had the H.I.S.S. immobiliser system, to combat theft.
