American Locomotive Company

Vehicle and Equipment Manufacturers

The American Locomotive Company, known as ALCO, was formed in 1901 by the merger of several northeastern locomotive builders and became the second largest builder of steam locomotives in the United States. It made large engines such as the Big Boy for Union Pacific and the Hudson for the New York Central. From the 1930s it built diesel-electric locomotives including the PA and RS-3 types, and it closed in 1969.
