Smart is a small-car marque created in 1994 as Micro Compact Car AG, a joint venture between the Swatch watchmaker SMH and Daimler-Benz. Its first model, the two-seat City-Coupe later renamed Fortwo, reached the market in October 1998, and the company became wholly owned by Daimler-Benz that year. DaimlerChrysler absorbed smart GmbH in 2006, making Smart a marque within the Mercedes-Benz Cars division. Since 2019 Smart has been a joint venture of Mercedes-Benz and Geely that builds small battery electric cars in China, with its European sales arm in Stuttgart. The name comes from Swatch and Mercedes-Benz, Swatch Mercedes Art.
