Eisenacher Motorenwerk, known as EMW, was an East German maker of automobiles and motorcycles based in Eisenach. It was the name given to the former BMW plant after a lawsuit in 1952 forced the factory to stop using the BMW brand. EMW kept building pre-war BMW designs, using a logotype similar to the BMW roundel but with red quadrants in place of the Bavarian blue. It also built the EMW 325/3, an off-road military light utility vehicle revived for the East German paramilitary police, of which 166 were made in 1952. EMW entered Formula One as a constructor in 1953 but took part in only one race, the 1953 German Grand Prix, where its car retired after 12 laps with exhaust problems. The automobile section later became VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach and built the Wartburg.
