The Unimog 404 is a small four-wheel-drive off-road truck built by Daimler-Benz in the Unimog plant at Gaggenau and sold under the Mercedes-Benz name from 1955 to 1980. It was designed for a payload of 1,500 kilograms and, in the 404.1 version sold as the Unimog U82, used a water-cooled straight-six petrol engine of 2,195 cubic centimetres rated at 60 kilowatts. A later 404.0 version, the U110, followed in 1971 with the cab of the Unimog 406. Unlike the earlier Unimog models, which were aimed at farming, the 404 was a compact military-minded truck, and a request from the French army to keep the spare wheel off the load bed led to the downswept frame that later Unimogs kept. A total of 64,242 were built, more than any other Unimog model, and about 36,000 of them went to the German armed forces, where many also served as fire engines.
