Humber Pig

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Humber Pig was a lightly armoured one-ton truck that served the British Army from the 1950s until the early 1990s. Humber, part of the Rootes Group, supplied the 4x4 chassis, and an armoured body was added by outside builders. The earliest vehicles were a cargo truck and a wireless-fitted truck, followed by an armoured personnel carrier prototype around 1956 and then the Mark 1 and Mark 2 production vehicles. The Royal Ulster Constabulary used it chiefly as an armoured personnel carrier from late 1958 until early 1970, and it became a familiar sight on the streets of Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Many local variants carried nicknames such as Flying Pig, Kremlin Pig and Squirt Pig, and the same chassis became the Humber Hornet missile launcher.
