Ford G398

The Ford G398 SAM was a 3-tonne truck used by the West German Bundeswehr from 1957 to 1975. When the Bundeswehr was set up in 1956 it planned a class of trucks with a 3-tonne payload and chose the G398 SAM partly because it was cheaper than the offers from Daimler-Benz and Magirus-Deutz. The chassis and its side-valve V8 petrol engine were a prewar Ford design, the V 3000 S, and Ford had to widen the axles to suit the army's standard cab and box body. The narrow track and high centre of gravity made the truck prone to tipping over. The V8 produced 68 kilowatts and drove through a switchable four-wheel drive. About 8,000 were built, roughly 2,580 with a box body and about 5,440 with a platform and tarpaulin. Soldiers nicknamed it the Nato-Ziege, the NATO goat.
