AEC Militant

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The AEC Militant, nicknamed the Milly or the Knocker, was a postwar six-wheeled military truck that AEC developed from its wartime Matador artillery tractor. It had a much larger cab, with a steel frame in place of the Matador's ash wood, and an 11.3 litre six-cylinder diesel engine. It came as a 6x4 or 6x6 in Mark 1 form and only as a 6x6 in Mark 3, and the variants included artillery and anti-aircraft tractors, semi-trailer tractors, cargo trucks, tippers, tankers and crane carriers. It served the British Army and other armies around the world, had no power steering in the Mark 1, and was praised for its cross-country ability and an extremely strong winch. Mark 1s were still in use in 1985 and Mark 3s in 1990, and many were later sold to civilians for recovery and forestry work.
