The Volkswagen Westfalia Camper was a camper conversion of the Volkswagen Type 2 and, later, of the Type 2 (T3), sold from the early 1950s until 2003. Volkswagen subcontracted the conversion work to the company Westfalia-Werke in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, and the campers were sold through Volkswagen dealers worldwide, including through the Tourist Delivery Program, under which a buyer collected a new van in Germany, drove it in Europe and had it shipped home. About 1,000 Camper Box conversions were made between 1951 and August 1958, the SO special models began in August 1958, and from 1979 to 1992 the Westfalia Vanagon was built, also called the Volkswagen Campmobile. Standard fittings included fold out beds, birch plywood panels, an icebox, a water supply and curtains, with pop up roofs and side tents as options.
