The Unimog 406 is the first medium-duty Unimog, built by Daimler-Benz at Gaggenau from 1963 to 1989 and offered as the U 65, U 70, U 80 and U 84. Where the original Unimog used a car engine, the 406 took a heavy-duty truck diesel, first the precombustion-chamber OM 312 and from 1964 the direct-injected straight-six OM 352, on a longer wheelbase of 2,380 millimetres and with more than twice the engine power of the Unimog 401. It came with an open cabrio cab, a closed cab, or as a part-vehicle for outside builders to finish, and it was refined through the decades, receiving disc brakes in 1973. A total of 37,069 were made, and the design spawned a wider family of related Unimog series that reached 94,215 vehicles. Many enthusiasts regard it as the classic Unimog for farming and forestry work.
