Renault CJ

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Renault CJ was a Renault truck that came out in 1911, a transition towards the more modern types that served in the First World War. It was presented to the Mines authority on 6 July 1911 and two examples were entered in the heavy truck trials organised by the Ministry of War in July and August 1911, where it was among other things tested as an ambulance with stretchers installed across the direction of travel, and it won a prize. Production was 36 trucks, for the civilian market only, though most joined the Army on mobilisation in August 1914. With its engine under the bonnet it resembles other Renault vehicles of the time. The engine is a four-cylinder Renault of 90 by 140 mm rated at 14 HP, and like the CA it has a reduction gear in a sealed housing in the middle of the rear axle. The payload is 3 tonnes.
