The Atego is a range of general-purpose rigid trucks that Daimler introduced in 1998, with gross vehicle weights from 6.5 to 16 tonnes in its latest form and a straight four or six cylinder engine. The first generation debuted in 1998 as the successor to the LK range, with 25 basic types and 240 variants, and about 170,000 were built before 2004. It won the International Truck of the Year award in 1999. In 2001 the heaviest Atego models became the separate Axor series, which joined the Actros chassis to the long Atego cab. A second generation appeared in 2004, with a redesigned front and cab and a new nine-speed transmission, and a third in 2013.
