General Motors BTV

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The General Motors Basic Transportation Vehicle, known as the BTV, was a simple small flatbed utility truck developed in the early 1970s by General Motors Overseas Operations for developing countries. It was meant to be built locally from knock-down kits with minimal initial investment, using a body made entirely of flat panels on a ladder frame, spartan equipment and a design that could be run and repaired without a dealer or service network. Most mechanical parts and the interior came from the Bedford HA, including its 1,256 cc four-cylinder four-stroke engine of 37 PS (28 kW), with some complex parts supplied from the Vauxhall plant at Luton. It was sold under many local names, among them Amigo in Costa Rica, Andino in Ecuador, Harimau in Malaysia, Harabas in the Philippines and Plai Noi in Thailand.
