The Ford Ecostar was an experimental electric delivery van that Ford's VCC110 programme team built in Dearborn, Michigan, in the early 1990s. Its chassis came from the European Escort van, and a sodium-sulfur battery under the cargo floor, kept at about 316 degrees Celsius inside a vacuum-insulated flask, fed a 75 horsepower motor under the bonnet. Between 80 and 105 hand-built production-prototype vans went to electric utilities and the United States Department of Energy for fleet trials that ran from 1992 to 1996 and covered more than a million miles, with a real-world range near 94 miles. Fires caused by leaking sulfur and the battery maker's refusal to guarantee more than a year of life led Ford to abandon the technology for fuel cells, but the Ecostar left behind the road-and-leaf logo that Ford went on to use across its products.
