Scammell Nubian

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Nubian was a heavy 6x4 dump truck that carried the Thornycroft name before Scammell took it over. When the Leyland Group reorganised its heavy vehicle businesses and the old Thornycroft works closed in 1972, the Nubian was the first product to transfer to the Scammell Motors site at Watford, and it was regularly adapted for military use. It was followed by the lighter LD55 6x4 dump truck. The two sources describe the line a little differently: the Wikipedia history calls the Nubian a heavy 6x4 dump truck, while Grace's Guide describes the transferred Nubian range as 6x6 airfield crash tenders, later replaced at Watford by a new range of rear-engined 4x4 and 6x6 crash tenders with up to 540 hp. When the Watford factory closed in 1988, the rights to build the Nubian were sold on to Unipower.
