The Scammell Mountaineer was a 4x4 truck that Scammell introduced in 1949 for civilian use. Most examples were fitted with a tipper body for off road construction duties, which suited the company's growing work in heavy construction, oil drilling, mining and logging after the Second World War. It followed the Showtrac as part of the postwar range built at Watford, before Scammell became part of Leyland Motors in 1955. The Scammell Register history page names the 4x4 Mountaineer beside the 6x6 Explorer among the vehicles with which the company kept its military presence in these years, so the sources differ on how far it served the forces.
