The Scammell Hundred-Tonner was an articulated heavy haulage vehicle introduced in 1929 and described as the world's largest lorry. Only two were ever made, both designed by Oliver North. They were first built with the Scammell 7 litre petrol engine, and after a couple of years were rebuilt with the then new Gardner 6LW diesel engine, which gave about 4.2 miles to the gallon. With a full 100 ton payload the front axle carried 10 tons, the drive axle of four solid-tyred wheels carried 40 tons and the remaining 80 tons rode on an eight-wheel steerable carrier bogie. Its speed when laden was no more than 3 mph.
