The Mercedes-Benz LP series, nicknamed the cubic range for its squared-off cab, was a family of cab-over-engine trucks first shown in 1963. The names encoded the specification, the leading digits giving gross weight in tonnes and the last two digits power in tens of horsepower, so an LP 608 was a six-tonne truck with 80 PS. Light, medium and heavy duty versions shared the fixed cab, which needed many hatches to reach the engine and earned the nickname Advent Calendar, and the heavy trucks later gained V8 and V10 diesels with a tilting cab. The medium and heavy models gave way to the Mercedes-Benz NG by 1975, the light range lasted until 1984, and Tata Motors built its cowl trucks on the design.
