The Ford Transcontinental was a heavy goods vehicle, built as a tractor unit and as a rigid, that Ford Europe made from 1975 to 1984; 8,735 were produced, 8,231 at Amsterdam in the Netherlands and 504 at the Foden plant in Sandbach, Cheshire. Assembled almost entirely from bought-in parts, it used the KB 2400 cab shell from the Berliet GR/TR, which Renault also fitted to its R-series, Cummins engines and Eaton transmissions, and it had a very strong chassis and heavy-duty suspension in anticipation of relaxed weight limits on heavy goods vehicles. Its 14-litre Cummins engine gave typical outputs of 290 to 350 horsepower and was updated from the NTC to the big-cam NTE generation by 1979, and the dashboard carried oil and water meters. Sales fell short of expectations because the heavy tractor was too heavy for the 32-ton limit then in force in Britain, although drivers liked it, and the Ford Cargo succeeded it.
