Scammell Scarab

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Scammell Scarab was a British three-wheeled tractor unit made by Scammell between 1948 and 1967, the successor to the Mechanical Horse. Often called a snub-nose lorry for the round hood in front of the cab, it was extremely popular with British Railways and other firms making deliveries in built-up areas, and the Ministry of Defence used it for internal transport on large bases. The name is a portmanteau of Scammell and the Arab horse that the Mechanical Horse had replaced in British Railways service, not a reference to the scarab beetle as commonly believed.
