The Vostok is a Soviet crewed spacecraft that first flew in 1961, a spherical descent capsule attached to an instrument module, developed to carry a single cosmonaut into Earth orbit. Its first crewed flight carried Yuri Gagarin, making him the first human to travel into space, and the program went on to complete five further crewed flights before being succeeded by the two seat Voskhod design.
