The Ghan is a long-distance passenger train crossing Australia from south to north, between Adelaide and Darwin. It began in 1929 as a narrow-gauge service to Alice Springs and was not extended the full distance to Darwin until 2004, completing a route first envisioned in the nineteenth century.
