The 2012 model year is the first of the ninth-generation Civic in North America, on sale from 20 April 2011 in petrol, hybrid and natural gas forms with a sedan and coupe and Si versions of both. The Civic Hybrid, launched in 2011 as a 2012 model, used a larger 1.5 litre engine and a lithium-ion battery in place of nickel-metal hydride. Reviews were lackluster, citing cheap interior materials, and Consumer Reports removed the car from its Recommended list. Honda recalled 50,000 2012 Civics over a driveshaft retaining clip.
