The Civic Hybrid debuted in North America in spring 2002 as the 2003 model. It paired a small 1.3 litre gasoline engine with electric motors, producing a combined 93 hp, with regenerative braking and EPA estimates of 46 mpg city and 51 mpg highway with the manual transmission. It also had lightweight wheels, a rear spoiler and aerodynamic enhancements. A 30th Anniversary Edition joined every model for 2003, sedans gained a Sport model, and Consumer Reports gave the Civic EX sedan its Recommended rating. The Hybrid was the first hybrid certified as an AT-PZEV by CARB.
