Honda revived the City in 1996 as a subcompact four door sedan, below the Civic, for developing markets in Asia; its code was SX8, and it was designed for and sold in the Southeast Asian market only. Production started in April 1996 at an entirely new plant in Ayutthaya, Thailand, with over 70 percent local content, and the car held a dominant position in the market. The first trims were a lower LXi and a higher spec EXi, on the 1.3 liter 3A2 and 1.5 liter 3A3 chassis.
