The 1990 model year brought a minor refresh in North America: a redesigned front bumper, a revised gauge cluster shape, updated tail lights and thinner side moldings. Sedans and wagons received automatic seat belts, powered shoulder belts retracting from the B-pillar, while the hatchback got a standard belt buckled at all times, and Canadian models kept manual belts. The EX trim began this year, a sedan with the 1.6 litre SOHC engine making 108 bhp and larger front brakes. In the United Kingdom the sedan arrived in early 1990 as a carburetted 1.4 GL.
