The 1989 model year saw few changes in North America apart from the return of the Si model, a hatchback with a 5-speed manual transmission and a 1.6 litre SOHC 16-valve engine making 108 bhp. In late 1989 Honda added the SiR trim in Japan, with a 1.6 litre DOHC VTEC engine making 160 PS, the first B-series engine and the introduction of Honda's VTEC variable valve timing. France's l'Automobile magazine ranked the car first in its 1989 survey of quality and reliability.
