The 2001 model year is the first of the seventh-generation Civic, which debuted in September 2000. Its interior grew markedly with a flat rear floor, and the front double-wishbone suspension gave way to MacPherson struts. In North America a 115 hp engine, 9 hp more than before, powered every Civic apart from the Hybrid, EX and Si, and all engines except the Si were enlarged to 1.7 litres through a longer stroke. It won the Car of the Year Japan Award for a record fourth time. For 2001 the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy recognized the natural gas Civic GX and the Civic HX.
