Gondola Lift

An aerial cable transport mode in which passenger cabins are suspended from a continuous loop of overhead cable and carried between two or more stations, the cable itself kept circulating by a motor-driven bullwheel at a terminal. Cabins attach to the moving cable through spring-loaded grips that release at each station so the cabin can slow for boarding before rejoining the loop. First built for mountainous terrain, most famously the Kohlerer-Bahn that opened near Bolzano in 1908, gondola lifts now also serve as urban transit across steep cities in Latin America, Europe and Asia.
