Dean Kamen

Road, Bridge and Cycling Engineers

Dean Lawrence Kamen, born 1951, is an American engineer, inventor and businessman best known in transport for creating the Segway, a self balancing two wheeled electric personal transporter, and the iBOT, a motorized all terrain wheelchair capable of climbing stairs and balancing on two wheels. Kamen holds more than a thousand patents and founded the medical device company DEKA, whose work includes portable insulin pumps and infusion systems. He also founded FIRST, a nonprofit that runs robotics competitions for young people. His inventions have been recognized with the National Medal of Technology and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
