EMD SDP35

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD SDP35 is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between July 1964 and September 1965. It was essentially an EMD SD35 with a steam generator in an extended long hood for passenger use, and an EMD 567D3A 16-cylinder engine generated 2,500 horsepower. Thirty-five were built for four American railroads. Seaboard Air Line asked EMD for the model as its older E-units wore out and traded in E4 and E6 units. Seaboard used it in high-speed passenger service, but Union Pacific found it unsuitable for passenger work and relegated its fleet to freight.
