The EMD FP7 is a 1,500 horsepower B-B dual-service passenger and freight diesel locomotive produced between June 1949 and December 1953 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and General Motors Diesel. It was essentially the F7A extended by four feet to give more water capacity for the steam generator that heated passenger trains. The wheel arrangement of the E-units made them less useful in mountainous terrain, and the Santa Fe and Northern Pacific had each tried other fixes before EMD added the FP7. A total of 378 cab-equipped A units were built and no cabless B units were sold.
