The EMD F40C was a six-axle, 3,200 horsepower diesel-electric passenger locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division in 1974 for commuter service in Chicago. Only 15 were built, for the Milwaukee Road commuter lines, and they later passed to Metra. It was derived from the SDP40F, swapping the twin steam generators for a 500 kilowatt head-end power generator, and used a 16-cylinder EMD 645E3B engine on the SD40-2 frame. The decline of six-axle passenger power led to the four-axle F40PH becoming the standard American passenger locomotive. All were retired from Metra service by 2012, and the last two, numbers 611 and 614, have been donated to museums.
