The EMC E3 is a 2,000 horsepower A1A-A1A diesel-electric passenger locomotive manufactured by Electro-Motive Corporation of La Grange, Illinois as part of the E series of passenger locomotives. The cab version, the E3A, was built from September 1938 to June 1940, with 17 produced, and the booster E3B was built in 1939, with 2 produced. It was the fourth model of the long line of EMD E-units and the first to use the 12-cylinder 567 engine, two of them for 2,000 horsepower, replacing the unreliable Winton 201A engines. Its sloping front gave the nickname slant nose.
