The 400 series was a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train type that East Japan Railway Company (JR East) ran between 1992 and 2010 on Tsubasa services over the Yamagata Shinkansen, Japan's first mini-Shinkansen line, which branches from the Tohoku Shinkansen. JR East leased the fleet from Yamagata JR Chokutsu Tokkyu Hoyu Kiko, a third-sector company jointly owned by JR East and Yamagata Prefecture. The trains were first formed as six-car sets, and a seventh car was added to each set in 1995 because the Tsubasa services proved so popular. The pre-series set S4, delivered in October 1990, was built by three companies: cars 1 and 2 by Tokyu Car Corporation, cars 3 and 4 by Hitachi, and cars 5 and 6 by Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Set S4 set Japanese speed records of 336 km/h and then 345 km/h in 1991, and the fleet entered service on 1 July 1992. Withdrawals began in December 2008 and the last set ran on 18 April 2010.
