Sri Lanka Railways S5

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

Sri Lanka Railways S5 is a class of diesel multiple unit train set built by Hitachi and introduced to Sri Lanka between 1969 and 1970, of which only two were imported. A one-train set consists of two power cars and three passenger cars, where earlier Sri Lankan diesel multiple units had a single power car, and the extra capacity let the S5 work the up-country main lines. Total passenger capacity is 100. The train has a buffet car and a kitchen and all passenger cars were air conditioned, and it was built with modern interior facilities for the special train tours market. It could run on any line in Sri Lanka except the Kelani Valley Line and was used only for chartered services. In 1970 an accident destroyed the engine of power car 720, and the train sets numbered 717 to 720 were later refurbished with one engine per train.
