The Hitachi Caravaggio is an electric multiple unit developed and built by Hitachi Rail Italy and named after the Italian Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Trenitalia ordered it in June 2016 with a contract of 333 million euros for 39 five-car units, and later raised its order to 118 trainsets in four-, five- and six-car versions, branded Rock, while Ferrovie Nord Milano also placed orders. The first trainset rolled out in April 2018 and the type entered revenue service with Trenitalia on 14 June 2019. It is a high-capacity double-deck regional train with cars about 27 metres long, powered by a 3 kV DC electric system producing 3,400 kilowatts with a maximum speed of 160 kilometres per hour, and it consumes 30 percent less energy than the fleet it replaces.
