The British Rail Class 803 is a five-car electric multiple unit built by Hitachi Rail for the open-access operator Lumo, which runs it on the East Coast Main Line between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley and onward to Glasgow Queen Street. Hitachi markets it as the AT300, and it shares its bodyshell with the earlier British versions of the Hitachi A-train family, but it differs from them in having no diesel engines fitted. Batteries are carried so that on-board services can keep running if the main electrical supply fails. In March 2019 First announced an agreement with Hitachi to buy five trains of this type, financed by Beacon Rail with a ten-year maintenance contract. The first test runs on the national network took place on 26 May 2021, and the class entered public service on 25 October 2021. Inside, seating is standard class only, with no galley and catering by trolley, and the units have air conditioning, power sockets and free Wi-Fi.
