British Rail Class 385

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The British Rail Class 385, branded eXpress by ScotRail, is an electric multiple unit built by Hitachi Rail on the design of the Hitachi A-train and belonging to its AT200 product family. A total of 70 units were built, 46 three-car and 24 four-car sets, ordered by Abellio ScotRail in April 2015 to run suburban and inter-urban services on newly electrified lines in the Central Belt of Scotland. The first sets entered service in late July 2018, delayed by the need to finish infrastructure works and by minor technical issues, and all 70 had been delivered by December 2019. They were first operated by Abellio ScotRail and then by its state-owned successor, and Hitachi has proposed a battery electric variant able to run on lines that are not yet electrified.
