British Rail Class 76

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The British Rail Class 76, also known as Class EM1, is a class of 1.5 kV DC Bo+Bo electric locomotive designed for the Woodhead Line between Manchester and Sheffield in northern England. A prototype, LNER number 6701, was completed at Doncaster Works in 1941 to a design by Sir Nigel Gresley, and after the Second World War a further 57 locomotives were built at Gorton Works in Manchester between 1950 and 1953, with electrical equipment from Metropolitan-Vickers. The class had air and regenerative braking suited to the long descents either side of Woodhead Tunnel, worked heavy coal trains and some passenger services, and was withdrawn en masse in July 1981 when the line closed. Number 76020, shown at the 1951 Festival of Britain, was selected for preservation.
