BR Standard Class 8

Steam and Early Locomotives

The BR Standard Class 8 is a one-off 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive designed by Robert Riddles for British Railways. Only the prototype was built, number 71000, named Duke of Gloucester and constructed at Crewe Works in 1954 as a replacement for the LMS Princess Royal Class locomotive 46202 Princess Anne, destroyed in the 1952 Harrow and Wealdstone rail crash. It was based on the Britannia design but used three sets of modified Caprotti valve gear, new to British locomotive engineering. Construction errors and a poor draughting arrangement made it unpopular with crews, with poor steaming and heavy fuel consumption, and its operational life lasted eight years. Bought from Woodham Brothers scrapyard by enthusiasts and restored, it returned to main line use in 2025.
