BR Standard Class 6

Steam and Early Locomotives

The BR Standard Class 6, otherwise known as the Clan Class, was a class of ten 4-6-2 Pacific tender steam locomotives designed by Robert Riddles for British Railways. Designed in the drawing offices of Derby Works, they were constructed at Crewe Works between 1951 and 1952; a further 15 were planned but the order was postponed because of steel shortages and cancelled with the 1955 Modernisation Plan. The class was based on the BR Standard Class 7 Britannia design, with a smaller boiler and weight-saving measures to give a Pacific with high route availability for the west of Scotland. Crews who worked them regularly gave favourable reports, but trials elsewhere found them hard to steam. The last was withdrawn in 1966, none was preserved, and a new locomotive, number 72010 Hengist, is being built.
