British Rail Class 45

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The British Rail Class 45, also called the Sulzer Type 4, is a class of diesel locomotives that British Railways built at its Derby and Crewe Works between 1960 and 1962. Together with the similar Class 44 and Class 46 they became known as the Peaks. Power came from a marine-type, slow-revving Sulzer 12LDA28B engine of twelve cylinders, turbocharged and intercooled and rated at 2,500 horsepower, and the class has an unusual 220 volt auxiliary electrical system. From 1962 the locomotives were the main traction on the Midland Main Line until Class 43 high-speed trains took over their routes; most were withdrawn between 1981 and 1988, the last by 1989, and eleven survive in preservation.
