British Rail Class 03

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The British Rail Class 03 is a class of 230 small 0-6-0 diesel-mechanical shunting locomotives that British Railways built at its Doncaster and Swindon works between 1957 and 1962, numbered D2000 to D2199 and D2370 to D2399 and later 03004 to 03399. With the similar Class 04 it was among the most successful shunters of the railway, built for light work such as depot shunting and station pilot duty, including places with weight restrictions where the larger Class 08 could not work. A Gardner 8L3 eight-cylinder engine of 204 hp drives through a five-speed epicyclic gearbox and a jackshaft with coupling rods. Withdrawal began in 1968, mainland examples had gone by 1989 and two Isle of Wight locomotives lasted until 1993; fifty-six members of the class survive in preservation.
