Southern Pacific GS-5 class

Steam and Early Locomotives

Two streamlined 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotives built by the Lima Locomotive Works for the Southern Pacific Railroad, numbered 4458 and 4459 and operated from 1942 to 1958. GS stands for Golden State or General Service. They looked the same as the GS-4 class, the difference being roller bearings that gave a smoother ride and added weight: number 4458 used Timken bearings and number 4459 used SKF bearings. They wore the orange and red Daylight scheme with a dual headlight casing and an enclosed all-weather cab, and were built for the Coast Daylight, San Joaquin Daylight and Sunset Limited. Considered the pinnacle of the GS series, they finished on the San Joaquin Valley line. Both were scrapped after running well over a million miles, and the bearings showed minimal wear.
